Dr. Chaney Receives Prestigious Education Award
Dr. Bill Chaney, headmaster emeritus, was named a winner of the prestigious Sawney Webb Award at this week's biennial conference of Tennessee Association of Independent Schools.
The conference was held Sunday and Monday in Chattanooga. Also named was Barbara Daush, former president of St. Agnes Academy in Memphis.
The award is named for William Robert Webb, founder of The Webb School in 1870, who was affectionately known as "Old Sawney." He died in 1926. Because of Webb's exemplary leadership, the TAIS named the award in 1986 to honor an administrator who has made outstanding contributions to the field of independent school education.
Chaney led Davidson Academy from its inception for 35 years, leading it to become one of the premier PreK-12 independent Christian schools in Middle Tennessee.
In addition to his work at DA, Chaney made significant contributions to the broader education community. He served for many years on the board for TAIS as liaison to TSSAA and was active in Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) before becoming a member of AdvancED's founding board of directors. He also helped organize the Middle Tennessee Fellowship of Christian School Admini
strators.
His dedication to education, his passion for Christian values, and his leadership have benefitted not only his own school, but public and private schools throughout the Southeast.
Like Sawney Webb himself, he is an exemplary "good school man." Congrats, Dr. Chaney!
