Lower School
The Davidson Academy Barkley Library serves Pre-K through sixth-grade students and over 30 faculty members. The library program serves to instill a love of reading, inspire life-long learning, and foster independent library use. The library houses over 11,000 volumes, including classics, the latest best-sellers for children, and a generous non-fiction section.
Students visit the library weekly with their class to check out materials and to practice information literacy skills. During this time, students are given instructions on proper book care, library manners, and library usage. They become familiar with the parts of a book, study authors and illustrators, and learn about different genres and various literary elements. Reading to younger students is enhanced through storytelling, puppets, and movement, while the upper grade students explore the different sections of the library and use their iPad to access the online catalog.
